Biography: Susan Smalley

Susan L. Smalley, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA who specializes in the genetics of psychiatric disorders, particularly those with onset in childhood or adolescence, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism (www.adhd.ucla.edu). Her basic research centers on gene identification and how understanding behavioral diversity from genetic and non-genetic perspectives influences health and well-being. She is the founder of the Mindful Awareness Research Center in the UCLA Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior to investigate genetics and the mind to better understand how increased awareness of one’s interconnectedness to oneself, each other, and nature influences creativity and compassion in shaping a kinder world. She’s married to Kevin Wall and they have three amazing children, Patrick, Timmy, and Kelly.
