One type of glue Nimita, you raise a very interesting idea here that I've thought about quite a bit. One type of glue holding society together (for better or worse) is its tendency to reward people who follow the majority's conventions and punish those who don't. So following convention could have negative consequences personally, and ignoring or refusing to be influenced by convention could have negative consequences socially.
