chasing butterflies

When that person called you up at odd times with desire to speak, you were busy then having fun with persons you admired, with those who filled your days with fun and laughter, make your hours shrink into enchanting seconds…..

That one call used to bring a break, little lull in those ecstatic moments. You some times pick up the phone and gave some polite excuse to him. Some times you just used to let it ring and later give him some half hearted alibi..

Then one day your butterflies flew away to other pastures, Leaving behind only shadows of sweet memories and empty hours, you turned around to search for that person who has pestered…

All you could see was a shadow disappearing in distant horizon, Love came, knocked your door, waited for you and departed rejected, When you were busy chasing butterflies the flower of your life withered

How poignant and eloquent poetry, Trisha! Chasing after fleeting, illusory things in life all the while rejecting that which is real and valuable. We do this, don't we? Thank you for this moving reminder.

dearest lahn, we make this mistake again and again in our youth and then learn. its better to concentrate what is in our life and relish them. far better than ignoring and chasing fleeting things. Wish you love, peace and happiness. Trisha

Today, on my walk oer hill and vale, a plethora of butterflies did gambol my attention, left and right, among the grass and flower fore-teasing every central footstep, never to be still more than the fleeting moment, captured and let go in One. I swear I saw you there among them, Sharmishtha ! Love weaves her magic thus, ed

dearest ed, i humbly deny, i am not a butterfly, :) :) if i was standing among them then its some thing else, but i am not a butterfly. i am a human being. Wish you love, peace and happiness. Trisha

Dear Sharmishtha, This is a beautiful description of how we chase after something "better" yet have a treasure right in front of us that we don't give credence to--until it's gone... Thank you, as always, for your eloquent and heart-filled writing. Love, Bodhirose

Trisha, I'd be interested to hear about how/when you started writing down your poems. It's something I can visualize as a daily practice. Sort of like how I am fortunate/blessed to be able to respond to posts on this site, daily. From an aspiring poet in her own right-way, Your loving friend, Elaine K

dearest elaine, i have contributed to msn's readers archive for two years (under my own name and three pseudos .. stories and articles), at that time i was fighting a war to let a person go (i was really obsessed with him) and this poem formed by itself. i wrote another three and was too shy to share. then i shared it with a friend of mine and he liked them so much that i posted them to msn, and got a huge foot fall and every body complimented, that friend (rohit) and another friend (ajay) made me write more poems. now i have you all and three steady friends outside intent who are working as wind beneath my poetry wings. my inspirations inevitably come from my heart, sometimes from stories i have read and sometimes from news i have read, and my own life. very frankly they come automatically and my friends tease me at their number (which i am too shy to admit). i have very few other duties as i am not involved in career, so i am free from frictions of outside world too, may be that is why they come so easily and so many in numbers. apart from that i have read too many books so i can play with words easily. i listen to music too, a lot more than most people and there is a wide variety.. english, bengali, hindi, instrumental even spanish, latin whatever catches my ear. Wish you love, peace and happiness. Trisha

Thank you for responding, Trisha. Lately I have been having phrases pop into my head, left and right. I too am an avid reader. I also listen closely to lyrics of many singer/songwriters, many female and of the folk/independent music tradition. I too have much free time from outside responsibilities and am quite isolated, mostly by choice. I think that we are quite similar, in a lot of ways. Perhaps one day I'll write a poem and share it on this site. Or a song, which I feel is a form of poetry. Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, India Arie, Jonny Lang, Dixie Chicks and The Dave Mathews Band are some of the artists I have been listening to lately. A small sampling, all favorites. I'm about to settle down for a nap, as I allow my mind to process this morning's phone call from my older brother who lives in Europe. I miss him dearly and we don't talk often enough. He's creative like me and we could converse for days! Love, Elaine K

Dearest elaine, whenever you have an idea, write it down, and later play with it. i sometimes write a poem, and when i next time see it (often, not always) completely change it.. completely.. the inner meaning remains the same, every thing else changes. i always keep a writing pad beside me, whenever something starts to swim in my head i write it down, later work on it. there is nothing odd in it, tagore used to sometimes get up in the middle of night to write down the poetry which came to him in his dreams (i have reached the phase, poems come to me right when i am going to bed or sleeping). i have not yet started to get up though :) :) the more you get involved in creativity you will see that ideas will come to you at the oddest times, if we jot down few lines the remaining will come to our mind when we sit down with them calmly. my seclusion is also by choice, because i dont talk much (was never talkative), and all my hobbies need solitary time.. music, reading, writing.. my friendship with my brother was like this .. even now when we chat we chat a lot. Wish you love, peace and happiness. Trisha

Blessed are the peacemakers, Elaine ;) Love, ed As soon as that first line pops into my head, the poem more or less writes itself. I don't wish poetry to be an end in itself, though, more a reaching out into meanings that can't otherwise be expressed.

dearest ed, they are blessed a thousand times by God, shattering peace is a child's play, creating peace is an angel's job. :) :) i am becoming your fan.... loving salutes emperor of wittiness. Wish you love, peace and happiness. Trisha

Ed, I like your note about open-ended-ness in creativity. It's all about the process. Trisha, Of course, I should be writing them down. I have paper pads all over the place where I am constantly jotting down or sketching out other ideas that pop into my head, so why not these seemingly out-of-thin-air phrases? Brilliant! Sometimes it takes another to ink the creative pen, which is why I'm so interested in community. I just don't get lonely and crave other people. I think I crave my isolation, so that I can create on my own terms. I'm throwing an impromptu picnic this weekend to test the waters of society. Just close neighbors; my favorite community, and my virtual family, kids, and all, aside from the community and family I'm finding here more and more everyday. What a wonderful stir your poem has created, Trisha! Bravo! Love, Elaine K

Trisha I love you, this poem is simply divine. You are an inspiration. I am handing you a golden pen that writes with light of gold and creates magnificent works with deftness and skill of an angel. You are the angel Trisha, carrying the pen that draws hearts into its soft folds. I love this poem so much, it is beautiful, simple and a lesson hidden behind its composure that many would do to learn at a young age. Thank you for sharing this with us.

dearest tamasin, I am really happy that it touched your angel heart, i too love you very much and respect you. actually it came from the deepest place of heart, so a person whose heart is so kind like you will instantly feel it. it was just my feelings in word, nothing plus or minus. i will cherish that golden pen with love and adoration forever. Wish you love, peace and happiness. Trisha

dearest elaine, the greatest joy for anyone is if her work helps someone else in any way. that is true meaning of creation. i learnt it from tagore and i passed it to you, because these things are so fine that they will vanish under more heavy things like chorelist... exactly, it needs likeminded people to create and relish the creation, i too am truly blessed with loving affection of people like you. who take some time out and read these and leave their comments. spending some fun time with a close knit group is great fun, i always did that. it revives you so very much. wishing you lots and lots of joy and fun. i think its not my poem, its the mutual affection which we all share at intent creates these waves of affection time to time. Wish you love, peace and happiness. Trisha

Beautiful and thought-provoking! I'm so glad to read that you are sharing the wisdom of your poet's heart with the world outside of Intent as well as the Intent family. Your fantastic poem reminded me of this quote and song: "Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you." - Nathaniel Hawthorne http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8021498205652058388 Peace and love, Dr. Deb

dearest deb, wisdom is one thing i am not very sure i possess, i am quite confident about possessing love/affection/compassion and that is what i am sharing with you all, and am blessed by the millionfolds in which it is returned. its a fabulous quote. i somehow almost 100% agree with that. will check on the song. thanks for sharing. Wish you love, peace and happiness. Trisha

Aha, Sharmishtha, this is what happens to most of us at all times. However, controlling our reactions to phone calls is not a solution. either. If you don't want to communicate to a certain person at a certain time, it is fine. otherwise relations would seem somewhat forced... But then you pay the price: love disappearing.
