Sign the Petition to Free Laura Ling and Euna Lee

Pay attention, please. It matters.

Please take the time to review, contemplate, and sign the following petition:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/free-euna-and-laura

This Thursday, June 4th (Wednesday Night in the US), Laura Ling and Euna Lee, two American journalists will go on trial in North Korea. They have been detained by North Korean authorities since March 17th, charged with hostile acts against the DPRK. Conviction could result in 5-10 years “re-education” in notorious labor camps.  From the very few accounts from those that have either escaped or survived the camps, they echo the infamous Soviet gulags of decades past.

At the trial Laura and Euna will not have the benefit of lawyers, witnesses, family members, nor - if prior accounts are to be believed - even translators, who may help them fully understand the proceedings.  It is not entirely clear if the trial will be the 24 hour kind endured by Roxana Saberi, the Iranian-American journalist detained, imprisoned, charged, convicted, and released in Iran just a few weeks ago for similar sounding “crimes,” or the interminable type put forth by American authorities against various “enemy combatants” identified and rounded up since 9/11/01. The lack of clarity is because there really isn’t any precedent for what Laura and Euna are about to endure.  No American has ever gone through the North Korean judicial system.

According to various online groups, over 100 journalists are being detained by assorted governments and regimes around the world.  Laura and Euna just happen to be amongst the most well known, if only because their situation is entangled with greater geo-political and global security matters.  Just this past week, the North, in defiance of the United Nations, conducted a nuclear test, flexing their military muscle for all the world to see.  Global condemnation soon followed, further backing a defiant North Korean regime into a corner and the isolation they have become accustomed with.

For 1 minute, forget the politics. Forget the fact that no one in the world really has any moral authority left to stand on. When the US and others condemn the North for detaining Laura and Euna on such charges, they are reminded of their own questionable judicial tactics. We need look no farther than the current crisis still ongoing in Guantanamo, Cuba. When the UN condemns North Korea for its nuclear testing, they are quickly reminded that well over 90% of the thousands of nuclear weapons sitting in various depots around the planet belong to the 5 members of the United Nations Security Council.

The truth is everyone is always right from their own point of view. Self righteous morality is a tale as old as time. To claim idealism while not practicing it all the time (a virtual impossibility) is a fatal flaw.  Totalitarianism cloaked as imperialism or colonialism - vague terms, that throughout history, have ended in the same somber graveyard of failed idealism.

For this moment, just know that Laura and Euna are sisters, wives, daughters.  Euna is also a mother.  This week, you will hear from their families, their muzzles removed by the US State Department that has had little success up until this point in negotiating their release.  They now agree that you should know what’s going on.  You will hear stories of these two women as compassionate, intrepid, committed journalists, and more importantly, as caring, thoughtful, and passionate people. No doubt, many of the dozens of other reporters around the world – whose names we don’t even know – have the same sorts of family situations, personalities, and passions.

The other sad truth for us is that we are only writing this post, because we know Laura Ling as a close friend. Until her predicament, similar sorts of situations endured by others have just been passing headlines. There’s no way to defend such laziness or indifference.  When the story becomes personal, you pay attention to every minute detail, and grasp any piece of information.  The urgency to pray for compassion and clemency from people you have no way to reach out to becomes your only hope.

Our hope is that in signing this petition, we as global citizens can ask that individuals lives can be separated from global politics.  That these two women have faced enough fear and suffering.  And that no matter where we come from, no matter what ideologies we possess, we can find compassion and humanity for our fellow human beings.

That matters.

Dear Mallika and Gotham, thank you so much for this blog. So you too know that ideologies come and go, but compassion and humanity have to stay. With that, any "demanding" and "claiming" vanish. Humility comes, and with it acceptance of the powerlessness of muscles, no matter what kind and how big. What is left? Our compassion. And here is something I think we still need to realize: we are not praying for the compassion and clemency of others, but for our OWN. The solution is not in North Korea, but in the heart of whoever cares about this whole situation. Please everyone do sign the petition. But please also look inside yourself and see if you have any compassion and clemency for those you have seen as enemies for so long. I believe that after accepting that neither of us in this conflict is "better", we need to liberate our heart and make a connection with "the other". I believe that our petitions shouldn't be to the US government, but to our own hearts. I believe that letting go of the walls in us is needed, for the sake of these women and all of us. I believe that any action we take, and I mean any action at all, from bombing N. Korea to begging at their door, is totally useless, unless we re-open the human heart connection between us. I believe that a massive, open and sincere communication of compassion and equality beyond ideology is needed, and that it has to be directed to North Korea. I have asked myself how on earth to do this. And as soon as I did, I found out that the N. Korean government ... is on Twitter! @kcna_dprk Instead of a sea of angry and inflated demands, instead of a sea of insults, threats and ridicule... how about drowning the NK government in tweets from our soul to theirs (oh yes they have souls too). Not about how human and fragile our two women are and how we beg for their release, but about how we truly care about how NK is doing and how we want to know what they feel, what their pain is, and what they believe we can do to return to communication and friendship. Why not act and do what our ego says is impossible? Why not tell them that we actually deeply love their children, as much as we love ours. Why not tell them that their women are as precious and fragile, and that we understand that their men have wanted to protect them in the best way they could. That we, too, have done our best, and that we are now looking at higher ways and so much want to do it togehter. Someone has to break the inner walls, and only love can do that. Call it crazy, but it's the only way.

Dear --Seek Enlightenment Knowledge Peace--, I fully understand your frustration. I have a personal mind too you know, which has responded with much harder words than yours to everything Love has demanded of me. My mind has considered Love weak, useless, powerless, woo-woo and right out insane. Believe me, I have done my best to stay out of the chaos Love creates in a person, and to cling to all my cherished beliefs and ways of "solving problems". I have done my best to stop loving all the many unlovable people I saw. Still, Love has dragged me with it, and despite my resisting mind, has managed to show me what I am and what I'm not, and where the only power is. So from person to person... pal, I agree! Love is totally nuts :) At the same time, I can't help knowing it is the only place of truth, sanity and power. I hope your love for our wonderful planet will grow so much and drive you so nuts, that you find out that it is the very point from where we create reality.

Dear All, from Aurora, Sharmi, Trisha, Mallika, Gotham to all the others typing, as am doing, their heartfelt concern and care for Laura, Euna and their families and friends, (there is another tragedy in the air, re an Air France plane, and a different kind in Burma ...), there is no end to our matters of concern and sorrow, what is so uplifting and keeps us afloat is the fact that the care and regard for the common humanity of us all is undiminished, the torch of shining humanity is as bright as ever...let me end the sentence here with love.jb

Dear Mallika and Gotham, I am signing the petition. And for anyone not already signed up with Amnesty International, please consider it. amnestyusa.org Recent e mail from them: When Roxana Saberi, a 32-year-old American journalist was sentenced to eight years in prison on trumped-up charges of espionage, you and thousands of other Amnesty supporters immediately responded by sending over 26,000 letters to the Iranian government in less than 24 hours. Your letters worked! Roxana was just released from prison today after an appeal court in Tehran reduced her sentence to two-years, which was then suspended. Senator Byron Dorgan from Roxana's home state of North Dakota credited the happy outcome to the international pressure generated by the case.1 Amnesty International worked closely with other human rights organizations in a world-wide effort to obtain justice for Roxana. Thanks for standing up for Roxana!

I have signed the petition. In my personal message box I have requested that they be allowed translators and legal representation. Surely it is the very least of their human rights?

I signed Laura and Euna's petition to free them, and also posted FB link from that site, with info, and joined the FB group calling for their freedom. North Korea is a very paranoid government, not known for it's human rights. This is very important, these women must be freed. Thank you Mallika and Gotham for saying "PAY ATTENTION. IT IS IMPORTANT." LOVE TO YOU, LISA/Jasmina

Yes we should all sign this petition but surely we can do a little more than pray for the less fortunate! Some 18,000 children die every day because of hunger and malnutrition and 850 million people go to bed every night with empty stomachs. And some of you good people think praying will help! It may help you feel better personally but there is no evidence whatsoever it will, or ever has helped anyone else. We allow thousands of children to die daily of malnutrition while we live in the land of plenty and pray a lot. What a crazy world!

Besides signing this petition, I have just sent an Open Heart Letter to Kim Jong Il. http://www.intent.com/aurora/blog/open-heart-letter-kim-jong-il If you find that your heart has room for everyone in our world, this is the moment to say it. I sent my letter to the NKorean Twitter page, but if you know of any other way- please let me know.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Gracias - Thank You Sister Mallika for your bringing our attention to this critical case in today's international politics. Politics is still a form of war without bloodshed and we should not be naive when one of our own has been kidnapped! I signed the Petition and will post it to other progressive online groups of which I am a member. My personal comment when I signed the Petition was: "As a humane being, I suppose the release of Euna Lee and Laura Ling from the hold of the North Korean government. Their unjust arrest and detention has angered, saddened and awakened the world even more to the inhumane policies of the North Korean government. Its false leaders have lost even more face in the eyes of all humane beings who know about this case. Bring them home!" Join our group on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=60755553149&ref=ts Follow on Twitter: @LiberateLaura Blog: http://liberatelaura.wordpress.com/ I am first and foremost a humane being who exists in the context of connected reality. My main agenda is a basic humane rights agenda in support of upholding the humane rights of all peoples. I agree with the basic sentiment of Sister Aurora above, but know that we must also be actively and personally involved in helping to bring about real change, movement and transformation in connected reality in the real immediate tangible world within which we live. There are many wrongs in the world that should be made right. Of course, we should be the change we seek in the world and the way is the way of peace, but that does not mean that we should be rigid in our being, in our thinking, in our doing and not condemn what is clearly evil, wrong and unjust when it is right before us here now. All truly humane and compassionate members of the Alliance for a New Humanity should stay awakened, seize the time and work in our own personal lives to change connected reality for the better, not be unarmed pacifists as evildoers wage war against us and our spirit family. Plus, we ourselves should examine our own hearts, our own souls and our own minds in order to comprehend that compassion requires creative bold action in the vanguard of truth! Cosmic consciousness is ultimately creative action in the here and now! Liberate all falsely caged individuals, including Leonard Peltier! "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Dear Peter, Of course what the North Korean government has done is wrong. There are inumerable wrongs in our world and being peaceful and compassionate doesn't mean ignoring or denying, nor being passive or weak. I used to think that the only two things we could respond with when someone has done something obviously wrong is to ignore or to accuse/punish. But then it happened that I read in a book of social anthropology about a small tribe who doesn't even have the concept of "punishment" in their culture, and never ignores wrong actions either. They have found another way: whenever someone has committed a crime, all the members of the tribe gather around that person and express their love, their appreciation, reminding him or her what a cherished, respected part of their tribe he or she is, and about how important and meaningful their particular role is in the community. They take turns and do not stop until any trace of anger has left, and the heart of the "criminal" and everyone else is once again so full with love, that the harmony is restored and good actions follow. Reading this was a moment of aha in my life, and I have acted upon this insight about "the third way" many times and seen the undeniable power of love at work. Most of all, I have been blessed with true friends who have shown me exactly how powerful love is in dissolving my own ego. Also, we are conditioned to think that love is simply abstract. But love and compassion do change matter, and there are many studies showing that. Yesterday I happened to watched a documentary about research made by the University in Wisconsin on Tibetan Buddhist monks. They found that the monks (who had spent many years developing their compassion) had a totally different brainwave activity than usual people and also that their mental exercises had created new and different pathways in the brain. So compassion transforms matter. But what was most interesting to hear was the interview with one of the monks who had been detained and tortured by the Chinese. He recalled that during the years of imprisonment, his biggest worry was that he would lose his compassion. He knew that it would mean his end, because without the power of compassion, he would never make it. Any worker in the field of energy will confrim that whenever we feel anger and hate, our life power diminishes immediately. In fact, it should be clear to anyone who has ever felt prolongued anger, how depleting this emotion is. And this means that the anger and hate the human race has become accustomed to feel is weakening the life power of humanity itself. If we do not want to exercise our "compassion muscles" for our enemies' sake, then we absolutely need to do it for ourselves, for our loved ones and for the sake of our species. It is our own anger that is poisoning our world, and every one of us has the power to choose life instead. I pray that Laura and Euna come home safely and quickly. I pray that everyone touched by their story grows in compassion for as many as possible. I also pray that we all return home, in unity with each other and the rest of existence. love, aurora

I have repeatedly said that in my opinion the idea of a personal God is a childlike one, but I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our own being. (Albert Einstein)
