The Seven Deadly Sins: A Breakdown by Sex and the Surprising Results
![]()
It comes as no real surprise that the seven deadly sins are not equally seductive for men and women. A recent study from the Vatican ranks the most common sins by gender, based on collected confessions. The notion of 'sin' is based in Catholicism, but let's forgo a theological discussion in favor of behavioral observation--by sex.
Men's primary impulse is lust, while for women it's pride. The connection between men and lust, or sexual desire, is not unexpected. The discovery that women are more prideful is interesting and seems to play out in a desire for perfection--maintaining a vibrant family life and home while carving out a professional niche and looking good through it all.
Following pride, females struggles with envy while males are prone to overindulge in food (gluttony). In a nod to the divide between Mars and Venus, the most frequent sins for men are the least frequent for women. Here's the complete breakdown.
Top Male Sins:
1. Lust
2. Glutton
3. Sloth
4. Anger
5. Pride
6. Envy
7. Greed

Top Female Sins:
1. Pride
2. Envy
3. Anger
4. Lust
5. Gluttony
6. Greed
7. Sloth

Last year the Vatican proposed seven new sins that are seen as more contemporary: Genetic modifciation, human experimentation, polluting the environment, social injustice, causing poverty, financial gluttony and the taking or selling of drugs. Of the now 14-Vatican certified sins, which one do you struggle with the most?

Wow, I'm surprised that Pride is the number-1 female 'sin' too. I'm also not convinced that pride is a sin. Arrogance maybe, but pride seems to be a positive motivator.
I agree. I don't think there's anything wrong with pride. We should be encouraging people to create ideas/products/etc that they're proud of.
I am really liking the new seven sins...(not like i want to do it) ..but i like the evolved thinking and if we followed those it would make a difference.
as for the other ones i think i am guilty of all ...but my order is more like: sloth, gluttony, greed, lust, anger, envy and pride....lol i guess i am not very womanly
LOL!

Who decides the real sins?
This is a very interesting post...I wonder about the need to modernize though cause a lot of modernity is just complexing simple things and it is perhaps the reason we have all those 7 new sins in the first place!
For instance each of those seven 'new' sins can be reduced to having root in one of the seven 'original' ones.
Also in terms of some people asking about pride...I think the Hindi/Sanskrit words Abhimaan and Ahangkar is kinda what comes to mind to me...and really pride is bad when seen as where you think it is about you and not the higher power...I guess as long as we all remain so very ego centric we will not even be able to understand this.
For me it is a personaly daily or even moment to moment battle to remember I am just the channel through which the higher energy flows...ego destruction is a daly struggle for us all...
I like that Intent has a post like this up on their site on the start of Lent...an evolution would be to do the same for Hindu festivals given that from what I see people who are Hindu or who claim to not have a religion but follow many Hinducentri things make up a large cross section of this community. And of course other religions as well. Continuing on my journey of Universal Collective Prayer... I join the Catholic (or Catholic centric) community on Intent which consists of other frequent visitors to this site like my brother in sharing the Eucharist that is Christ- Grek Kirk in this reflective time of the seven deadly sins-the Lent...the 40 days that Jesus spent doing the same...
Wow...imagine how different the Morgan Freeman/Brad Pitt/Kevin Spacey movie Seven would be with the new 7 sins added!
I agree that I have a hard time with pride being a sin but I think its being overly proud that they think of. Like being so proud that you don't think you need God in your life. Just a thought. My favorite new sin is financial gluttony...that has been a source of disgust for me for a long time. Thanks for the great article!!!! Have a blessed day!
7 Virtues :-
1. Prudence(judgement) - Very difficult in modern times
2. Justice - Not so easy
3. Restraint to temptation - Practical
4. Courage - Should have
5. Faith - Should have
6. Hope - Should have
7. Love - Must have
what do you say ?
Married sex is not about loving any woman or any man. It is about showing love to this woman, this man. What does that mean? Only they can show you, and that often comes as they are learning themselves. A loving, listening, open heart is the greatest asset a spouse can bring to bed.
Thanks,
