The Taj is Burning

We were at the airport heading to Phoenix for Thanksgiving when my mother called to see if we knew what was going on in Bombay.  She said the Taj Hotel had been attacked, and was burning.

For an instant, I felt like I was back in my room at the Taj - a hotel I had lived in for months while working with MTV to relaunch the channel in India.  The Taj represents to me, and many around the world, the charm of a bustling city that captures old and new worlds.  I thought about the open lobby, the nightclub, hanging out in the coffee shop.  Walks along India Gate...

Undoubtedly, the terrorists who planned these attacks knew exactly the effect of targeting the Taj, the Oberoi Hotel, Cafe Leopold and other spots in the city.  These are the places that business people hang out in, that the ex pats frequent, that high society socializes in.  These are the places that are not touched by the religious tensions, the poverty, the harsh realities of a city - a country, region and world - that has extremes of every kind.

Within an hour, while still at the airport waiting for our flight, we had connected with our friends living in Bombay, as well as those who were visiting India on business.  One was stuck in the Marriot Hotel, intermittently texting my brother for information about what was going on outside his room and reassuring him he was still around.  I obsessively texted my brother from the airport for updates.

But the horror is that it never ended.  I read on CNN about my friend, Manuela Testolini, being at the Oberoi when the gunshots started. I emailed her and heard back within 1/2 hour that she is ok.  Her passport is in her room at the burning Taj and now she has to figure out how to come home.

In her email she writes about what happened -- "then suddenly a gunman was coming into the restaurant. we left everything and ran thru the kitchen. 2 busboys tried to stop him and they were shot. but thankfully the gunman did not come in to the kitchen. we all ran because were heard more gunshots and ended up in the ballroom of the hotel where we stayed for 2 hours listening to gunshots and bombs in the darkness. "

This is the new world.  We are so intimately and instantly connected.  I breathe a sigh of relief knowing my friends are ok.

And, yet, how hopelessly disconnected we are at the same time.  As I reflect on my nostalgic days at the Taj Hotel, this is what stays with me...

A chasm - a disconnection between people and cultures -- that has always existed is expressing itself more and more in todays world.

The Taj is burning.  The Taj - and all it represents - is burning...

I fondly remember the beautiful Taj hotel, resplendent in all its glory as it stands right across from the Gateway of India. Lets all keep the people of Mumbai and all those affected in our prayers...prayers of hope, healing and recovery. I hope Mumbai, India and we all come out stronger.

This situation you have just described is on the local news right now here in Anchorage just as I am reading this post. It is shocking, horrifying, and deeply distressing. There has been great loss of life - at least a hundred people is what the report says. This so saddens me. -caracal

Dear Mallika, Thank you for sharing your intimate thoughts. I knew on Intent I would find out more that what I was finding out on t.v. All I can say to you Mallika is that I bless you with a Thanksgiving blessing. May the Goddess Bless your heart with such an abundance of overflowing love that all who are near you will feel and share the bliss. Even more that those who are nearest your heart no matter where they are in time and space will feel this abundance of overflowing love just a heartbeat less than you and they will always feel the love that flows from the Goddess to the world, through your heart and picking up an imprint of you along the way. love and light, Stuart http://stuartmarkberlin.com

When I see such chaos and violence I also think and realize how disconnected we are from our true nature and how much pain that causes in the world. When violence and fear touches us close we realize even more what is actually going on all the time, everyday throught the world. It only encourages me even more to do everything I can to contribute to create a better world. In this line Malika, I thank you for the wonderful work with Intent.com, this is an inspiring place in the journey of personal and social transformation.

Is it greed that disconnect people and cultures? Why don't they work this hard to achieve peace, calm? There are people who have achieved success through peaceful means.

Mallika, Peace and Love for you and your family and friends that are so close to this occurrence and everyone that is touched by this devastation. Sharing your beautiful memories of this place brings yang to the yin of this situation. People that have hate in their hearts will continue that path, but it

Dear MAllika, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us today. I have never been to India, but I hold it as one of the most aw-inspiring places in the world and now someone would like to destroy it? I shed tears this thanksgiving morning! I cannot beleive that once again people are fighting for their lives against other people. Where is the peace in this world, where is the love?, why does this happen? It is not right and not fair and I just don't get it. No one should have to run from gunshots, no one should be killed, no one should be tortured, no one! I pray today for the people of Mumbai and their families and friends!

As I watch CNN, I wonder why would they attack civilians, what message are they trying to deliver to the public and the government. much chaos is taking place. Why would they destroy lives. I am in shock watching what is going on even after 24 hours things are not settled. Clash between religions has been the root cause for hundreds of years within humanity. I wonder if I will see peace in my life time on this earth. peace Ashie

I have been following this for the last 24 hours. It's terrible. I was at the location of two of the last IRA bombings in London within an hour or two of the explosions in 1996. Up close and personal makes it even more appalling. Ironically, I got invited to a conference on the new administration's counterterrorism policy organized by one of the leading conservative think tanks here in Washington. I'm also in the middle of writing a chapter on addressing terrorism from a conflict resolutino perspective. Best. Chip

I give THANKS today for India and to India. India has been the source of so much spiritual knowledge which has guided me and continues to. I can't help but think that this occurrence is part of our collective healing... Therefore I give THANKS for those who are scared and suffering and I send my LOVE and blessings for peace to those who are responsible. Let us use our collective power to manifest peace for EVERYONE. Yes we can. Love to ALL of you!

These are my comments to Gotham's similar blog. We need to stop putting our energy into what we don't want so we stop creating it. "Solving the Isreali/Palestine issue would be great, however, that is a symptom of a much much deeper problem. These are not a people in touch with the natural state of their souls. We can solve this and give them exactly what they want, but then they'd find something else to fulfill their anger, hate, and violent needs and urges. This has been a way of life for too long. It is all they know. This is something that needs to be tended to from the inside out. It starts with their hearts, and then it will filter into all other aspects of their lives. Again, all we need to do is expand the consciousness of the planet and none of this will exist. People who laugh and say this is all too simplistic in nature to actually occur are the very ones blocking this from happening. What we focus on GROWS. The more we talk, think, and act about these terrorist attacks, the more energy we put into them and the bigger it gets. Let's instead focus on what we do want (PEACE), and put our energy in that direction instead. We want peace, therefore let's make a conscious decision toward that and stop giving our attention to pontificating on terror, violence, and the like. What we think about, we bring about so let's stop these conversations. Again, by focusing on violence in our thoughts, words, and actions helps it perpetuate. And I mean that in only the most respectful and loving way". Let's pray for peace for the families that have been affected by this. Namaste, Krissy

I feel in deep congruency with all the other people who have made comments here. The hatred in the world is deplorable, I've been practicing "non-violent " communication skills for the past few years and it has really helped me stay out of judgement and anger. Hopefully Obama will address this issue of terrorism with diplomacy and use skillful people who know how to address these issues from compassion. Once when I was in a class with Marshal Rosenbery the man who started the program of NVC, he talked of a time when he was working with the Palestinians and although hard work, he as able to help them return to their hearts for look for a peaceful solution.Morgaine

I have read many of the comments and agree with most, I was dissapointed with the comment of one young man (he's 53) that possibly the U.S. and Britain could maybe have something to do with it, please don't say such things, that is getting pretty close to an abuse, I have no Idea who these terrorists could be, but more than likely they are fanatics of some sort, It is usually about power, religion or money, or or a combination of any of them, religious fanatics are probably the most dangerous as they are willing to die for their beliefs, any fanatic is dangerous look at some of the soccer hooligans in europe, and that is over a game!! If these terrorist acts are being done in the name of religion, then we have to understand that the young men doing these things really believe that they are doing good things, necessary things, It is only a couple of hundred years ago that my ancestors were burning witches in the name of religion. If it is for political purposes, then quite often young men and women who are religious fanatics, are used as the storm troopers, There are people all over the world, looking at India and wondering who could do such a terrible thing, and there are people all over the world, already attempting to assign blame, It's easy to blame the U.S And Britain, they seem to be the big guy's in the playground, but it could be those communists, maybe the muslims, no it's catholics, maybe it's that other group 'the Chopra's". Today My Grandson (7 years of age) said to me "is there going to be a Third world war? I tried to answer, but how can I, what should I say? , Let there be peace on earth

The people who are doing this in Mumbai, I can imagine them. So angry, so isolated, so unable to express themselves in other ways, so idealistic, so rigid, so determined to be right, maybe confused, maybe weak, maybe coward

compassion filled thoughts for all the people in India who are shocked and distressed. Sadness and disbelief at such a pre-meditated tragedy. Love to India, she will survive the outrage. May the people of the world unite in their feelings of compassion towards the injured. Love and Light Tamasin xx

Thanks everyone, for the kind words. As an Indian from India, in Mumbai ( in fact I am a couple of KMs away from the Taj hotel where this madness, orgy is still on while I am writting this comment) can feel the impact perhaps more than many others. India has historically always stood for peace and harmony. Never has she retaliated with violence agaist any of her aggerssors in the thousands of years of her existence, but has accepted them in her home, while silently weeping and bleeding...praying, some day good sense will prevail and her tormenters would see reoson. Pray God, my Mother India continue to have streangth and forgive the evil. This in the interest of not only India but the whole world, for what India can give to the world, may be, none others can. Provided, others understand what in life is actually worth living for. V C

Dear Malika, The Taj Hotel, infinite timeless beauty, a symbol of an alluring culture. I am in love and so grateful with India and it really hurts to see and feel the pain. When I was in India one of the things that stroke me the most was the peaceful way all religions and diversity conveyed. This symbol will rise again, let us send all our love to the ones that are confused, they shall return once again to the the safe haven."Bombay" emerged from the Portugal term "Bom Bahai" meaning good bay or harbour. All my love to you and India Adriana

Deaest Malika , My heart was in knots and pain as I saw the Taj in flames . I too love India , and have traveled there on business and was even considering an opportunity to live in Bangalore . Thinking how it must have been for friends to have to flee for their very lives is so scary and yet a sigh of relief because they did make it . I can see how India has become a target due to it's sudden growth spurt in the Communications world . I was on the streets of NYC during the horrific events of 9/11 with my 8 yrs. old daughter as I rushed to remove her from the school she attended , and we watched as the masses of dust covered business men and woman made their away from the downtown area of destruction. Fear , confusion and the realization that sometihing in the world has shifted because of this day were all the sobering thoughts we contended with that day and the days to come. But it was the choice I had to make that either paved victory or defeat over the event . It was , how shall I be about this ..... what decision will I put forth about the world I create in thought ,word and action that will continue to create the world I choose to live in ...and my daughter's world too.. So , I felt those same pangs while watching the events unfold in Bombay.... and I am that compassion , peace and love .....STILL...

Mallika: Even though I have never been to India, there are 2 places in the world I am forcefully being drawn to. One is Mother Teresa's Calcutta and the other is the darkest places in Africa. THANK-YOU, a thoughful, generous, beautiful and inspiring post!!! As so many others believe, I believe everyone in the universe is separated by no more than 6 other people. I know that you know that you are not alone and that the thoughts and prayers for the victims, the evil doers and you are being sent from around the world. I know your faith and our prayers bring comfort to all impacted by this darkest of tragedies, help sustain everyone and will deliver us all back into the light very soon. I have been to Church everyday this week to Pray for the victims and evil doers and to coin some truthfull wisdom: "We are all citizens of India now". PEACE, LOVE, FAITH and BLESSINGS!!!

Tim I love your approach to this whole crisis and although all these posts make me feel so warm to be on a place like Intent...I was particularly touched by Greg saying..."We are all "Indian" this morning." Cause to me that sums it all up I think...I know being of Indian ancestry and of Hindu background (so India is the birth place of my religion) this is hurting me more than if it would if it was some other place so I really admire your compassion and open heartedness to be able to say something like that coming from a different background... My intent is that I would feel that sort of compassion if it was another ethnic group too although I dont think I am as an enlightened being as you just yet...cause yes I'd feel compassion but I dont know if I'd feel as much...although for sure I think the world at large is really coming a long way cause there was so much outpouring and sharing when it had the tsunami in 04...it happened on my birthday I remember waking up on the morning of my 30th bday to it...and like my boss a Trinidadian of Afro ancestry almost broke down to tears in his office a morning when I went to discuss some work with him and he happened to open a slideshow fwd someone sent him bout the Chinese earthquake...and he started to read out the slides to me...like cause each slide had these explanations and he really almost broke down when he read the one bout a teacher who lost her life saving the kids...I think I then ended up wanting to cry too cause crying like laughing is contagious...and I was really surprised to see that side of him too! I just saw some more news bout the attacks on ZEE TV cause it's the one Indian channel we get here (well sort of Indian cause I think it is more an American channel but for the Indian community there? At least all the ads seem to be geared that way.) and it does make it look more on the ground though like you really feel like you are there compared to what I had seen on BBC and CNN earlier on ...but ZeeTv wasn't showing it then ...as it is not 24 hrs news...although I do felt they should have adapted and had more...but it did make it feel more realistic to me although it was tough for me to keep up as I'm not fluent in Hindi (and this was the Zee tv hindi news version) and so I had to pay attention to the words lot and I miss some words and then they had a set of Hindi up on the screen to give like chronologies etc of the events...but I couldnt read the hindi script that fast so just got some words...but was diff to see it reported out of India. I stumbled about this blog htttp://www.desipundit.com that is filled with news in English by bloggers out of India...for anyone curious to get those viewpoints. My mum was watching the news with me too and her Hindi is better as she grew up speaking Hindi more and Bhojpuri and she's been wondering all day or wishing she could do something to help! She is naturally like that on the whole anyway...but she was the one who told me bout the whole thing in the first place cause I dont watch TV much and she said to me that my sis in law from the US had called her and said if she didnt know what was going on in India and if we werent seeing on news how they were bombing up the place....I had feared that it was much worse and when I saw it was just one isolated place and not the whole country! I to be honest first thought well...it's not like this doesnt happen all the time in India I mean to be honest people get killed in big bunches in India all the time for something or the other...this one is just big on CNN and BBC cause of the foreigners being involved...but then I started to feel it more and so looked on...one of my aunts originally from India and with family in Delhi passed by and she said well what can you do...But I think the first blog on here was Lynn Higgin to Pray for India! And it I think was what made me realise I really should be blogging about it. I didnt first think there was any point cause what good could I do...but I'm glad I started to cause even if I reach one person to share universal collective prayer it's good...so my mum kept saying today she wish she could do something to help and I kept wanting to say to her well take comfort in at least Im blogging but then didnt say anything...cause really to be honest to myself Im not 100% sure bout the reach of my blogs and their impact but I still try...and perhaps at least they bring self healing if not anything else...

This is totally unfair; innocent Lives being cruelly snatched by perpetrators of such condemnable actions "When" will they ever understand that by committing such actions, they are literally committing the very most sinful of actions! It only leaves one more confused, perplexed and wondering in amazement with so many questions unanswered as to Why, Why and Why are such actions taking place? What do the perpetrators achieve? Why don't they realize and understand that the World needs Peace, Love, Progress and Prosperity; that when they first contribute and invest in Peace and Love can they expect to reciprocate likewise, "When" will they ever learn? Life is extremely Precious and when the perpetrators just take decisions and commit unforgivable actions; they only foster more repulsion and disgust at what they are seeking to demonstrate. By committing such actions, they are only creating more hatred for themselves primarily; as well as further distancing and surrounding themselves with a vicious circle of further infinite hatred I would like to extend my sincere sympathies and condolences to the bereaved Families and prayers and thoughts to all affected by this attack

I have never been to India, but have been drawn to go there. I was heartsick when I saw the news on Thursday, and just started to send out positive energy to those in harm's way. My thoughts are with you and all those affected by this senseless tragedy.
