The Artist as Storyteller

This is the second post in a series addressing the need I believe our species and this planet have for creative people to bring back the spirit of sacred service to the arts. The previous post, The Artist as Mystic, promoted the idea that the creative community possesses the power not simply to render an image of a

Synchronicity is the story I'm presently telling myself considering that I just finished watching, "The Hero's Journey, " ten minutes ago from the Joseph Campbell Foundation. Manny, we've chatted briefly before on Gaia.com...Howdy again. For me, it feels as though the present mythos is that we are the crying baby, which is anxious as it leaves the empty breast unable to understand we are about to encounter a warm full breast from which to sup. I think we're a little lost coming from a story that no longer works, as Campbell points out in regard to literal, historic interpretations, and moving into confronting the fact that life is mysterious. We have mountains of information and still lack knowing - acknowledgment - regarding the utter mystery of a life, each life . Conditioning seems to overwhelm open perception. The stories I seem to observe all to often are bleak, post-apocalyptic and violent. However, I think we still want to tell the story of making it to the other side but right now crying and thrashing about take precedent. We need some artists and storytellers to envision the cooing, warmth, and love of a baby on the full breast. (I'm sure you Freudians are letting me have it right now...lol...) Long one Manny, sorry!

Hey Rod! Nice to reconnect; I hope you've been well : ) Wow, that's quite a synchronicity! I have a special place in my heart for that program. The Hero's Journey by Stuart Brown and Phil Cousineau was my first introduction to Campbell's work back in '93. That was the hook for me and I'm still following that golden thread. Ha ha! Don't worry about the Freudians, your analogy was good enough for Campbell too, except he referenced the example of a marsupial mother and her young. In the way the infant moves from the deep womb to the pouch (to which Campbell referred humorously as a "womb with a view"), humans move from the deep womb to the womb known as "mythos." Both species give birth to their young far too early for them to fend for themselves. Consequently, another level of gestation must be engaged before full maturity has been achieved. I'll be getting more into that in a future post I have planned regarding the ways in which our mythos CONNECTS us to our experience of life. It is in the effectiveness of this connection process that we can overcome the challenges you articulate so well in your comment below. Peace... =m=

Hail Fellow well met! Perhaps the new story, myth, allegory IS Connection. Everyone certainly throws around One-ness and Unity but it still seems a bit unreachable and immature in practice. KWIM? How do we create the Mythos of Connection to relate to such a transcendent idea? Religion has kinda botched it, sadly, with literal and historic views. Like you say science is "connecting" to mystery as in the quantum string world, which borders more on philosophy now. Are Strings our new Myth? Man, I wish I was an artist. I'd like to run with that, ya know? The Internet...the Web........................of life, social NET works, NET working, lines of communication leading to the MYSTERY. Whoop! I'm getting heady...LOL. Looking forward to more Manny. Love One Another.

It does seem we are going through a period of improving our collective story, here on earth. Watching Bill Mahr last night, they had one of the award winning writers from the Simpsons. I was really appreciating how the Simpsons actually challenged the world view of many people in a comical fashion. Too cool. Great blog, Manny!
