Biography: Asha Praver

Asha Praver met Swami Kriyananda in November of 1969. She immediately recognized him as a spiritual guide and shortly thereafter became a founding member of the original Ananda community near Nevada City, California. During her time at Ananda Village, Asha served as a teacher, counselor, and cook, as well personal secretary to Swami Kriyananda. At the request of Swami Kriyananda, Asha and her husband, David, moved to the bay area in 1987 to start an urban Ananda community. From Ananda Palo Alto, Asha Praver continues to share the benefits of yoga, meditation, and the spiritual teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda with people from the Bay Area and all around the world. Living in intentional community has brought these spiritual teachings to a decidedly practical place, and Asha has a gift for showing people how to apply spiritual principles in very practical ways. Ananda Palo Alto is a residential community of about 100 adults, plus children. They live in a converted apartment building on about 5 acres in Palo Alto. There is also a school, a temple, a teaching center, and a metaphysical bookstore. Asha's book, Swami Kriyananda as We Have Known Him, is a synthesis of the teachings of and stories about Swami Kriyananda. Containing more than 200 stories which span 40 years, it is a collection of personal reminiscences about, conversations with, and teachings from Swamiji. Asha has spent nearly all of her adult life living in an Ananda community, sharing the Ananda teachings with others, and incorporating them into her own life. Asha is also the co-author of Simply Vegetarian (a cookbook) and has put together numerous ceremonies and pageants within the Ananda communities. She and her husband, David Praver, have been married for 26 years.
